Children’s Care at Wave Dental Specialists

Give your child the best start in life by helping them achieve and maintain a healthy, happy smile. Just like adults, children need routine dental care to enjoy the benefits of optimal oral health and wellness. However, children have unique needs as their teeth and jaws develop from infancy through their teen years. This is why it’s important to find a trusted pediatric dentist and make sure to bring your child to regularly scheduled visits.

Wave Dental Specialists provides a complete range of children’s dental services to help children and families get the comfortable, confident, lasting smiles they deserve. We treat children of all ages and stages of care, including those with special needs.

Emergency Dentistry

Children are prone to accidents and injuries while playing or participating in physical activities. They are also prone to cavities, even with good at-home care and help at home. So if your child experiences a toothache, chipped tooth, knocked-out tooth, or other emergency condition, we are here to help.

Phase 1  Orthodontics

Children’s teeth and jaws develop as they grow and need to be monitored by a trained specialist to help guide that development. Our orthodontists and pediatric dentists provide interceptive orthodontics, also known as phase 1 orthodontics, to help our young patients achieve healthy teeth and jaws. This includes functional appliances, limited phases of braces, specialized retainers, expansion appliances, space maintainers, and more.

Happy Gas

Our team uses Happy Gas to help your child feel relaxed and at ease throughout their procedure. This mild sedative is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose, producing a calming effect without putting the child to sleep. It takes effect quickly, easing anxiety and reducing discomfort, making dental visits a more pleasant experience for our young patients. Happy Gas is ideal for children who are nervous about dental work, allowing them to receive the necessary care while ensuring their comfort and safety.

Frequently asked questions

How often should children go to the dentist?

All patients can benefit from regular preventive dental visits, and this includes children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children see their dentist every six months.

When should I start taking my child to the dentist?

Your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled by 12 months of age, or within 6 months of their first tooth coming in. These first dental appointments typically last 30-45 minutes and typically include an exam of your child’s teeth. As they get older and their dental needs change, their exams will become more in-depth.

Why should my child see an orthodontist?

You should expect to take your child to their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Interceptive orthodontic treatment is recommended for patients between the ages of 7-9. If your child is older than 7, be sure to book an orthodontic examination to check for potential concerns with their bite or tooth alignment.

What is the best age for a child to get braces?

Your child’s orthodontic treatment needs are unique and require personalized care. However, if your child is older than 7 and showing signs of orthodontic issues, it is recommended that your child gets braces between 9-14. It’s easier to shift teeth in the jaw prior to puberty, and waiting until after puberty to seek orthodontic treatment can lead to longer treatment times.
